Safety history
- 2021-06 · Philips explicitly lists DreamStation 2 among the devices not affected by the June 2021 recall, which concerns degrading PE-PUR foam in the first-generation DreamStation and other devices. Some DreamStation 2 units were shipped as replacements for recalled DreamStation 1 devices. Source
- 2023-11 · On November 28, 2023, the FDA advised users to monitor DreamStation 2 machines for signs of overheating after receiving more than 270 reports (fire, smoke, burns) between August 1 and November 15, 2023, versus fewer than 30 in the previous three years. The FDA cited a possible electrical or mechanical malfunction. It did not recommend stopping use if no problem is observed, but advised inspecting the device before and after each use and unplugging it if it smells burnt or smokes. Source
- 2023-12 · France's ANSM relayed the FDA communication and asked users to watch for signs of overheating (smell, smoke). It reported two cases without patient harm in France (February 2022 and February 2023) out of 77,250 DreamStation 2 units, and asked Philips for a European overview of cases. Source
- 2024-04 · Agreement announced January 29, 2024; consent decree entered on April 9, 2024 by a federal court in Pennsylvania. Philips Respironics does not sell new CPAP or BiPAP devices in the US until FDA requirements are met; servicing of devices in use and sales of accessories continue. Outside the US, Philips continues to sell new devices. Source
